Russian theater director Yuri Butusov dies by drowning

Russian Yuri Butusov, one of the country's most prestigious theater directors, died this Sunday at the age of 63 after drowning in Bulgaria, the Medusa website reported, citing several colleagues.
Exiled after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Butusov was currently vacationing with his family on the shores of the Black Sea , said the current director of the Vakhtangova Theater, Kiril Krok.
A six-time winner of the Golden Mask, he received his most recent award in 2021 for a show based on a play by Swedish writer Henrik Ibsen.
Born in Leningrad, he worked at the Lensovet Theatre from 1996, where he directed it until 2004, and then from 2011 to 2018, when he directed the Vakhtangova Theatre.
Throughout his successful career, he also worked in theaters such as the Satirikon — where he premiered plays such as Richard III and King Lear —, Chekhov and Pushkin, as well as staging plays in countries such as Denmark, Norway and South Korea.
Butusov left his post as director of the Vakhtangova Theater in November 2022, while in Paris, and then worked in the Baltic countries.
Several Russian cultural figures, including directors, writers, actors, musicians and screenwriters, emigrated after the start of the Russian military campaign in Ukraine.
