Before marrying Prince Albert of Monaco, Princess Charlene was a professional swimmer, having represented South Africa at the Olympic Games.
Now, since becoming a member of the Monegasque royal family, Charlene has used her exposure to raise awareness about child safety, arguing that all children should have access to swimming lessons.
In a new interview, the princess spoke of the "devastating" reason why she decided to embrace this cause with such dedication.
In the conversation, Charlene recalled the tragic death of a cousin when he was a child. "Richard drowned in a river very close to my uncle's house," she recalled. "He was only five years old. It was devastating for the whole family. I don't think that kind of pain ever goes away."
Noting that water environments can be dangerous, Charlene explained that "learning to swim" is the best protection a child can have.
Prince Albert's wife also hopes that one day swimming will be recognized as a basic learning experience and a fundamental right, just like reading.
The princess also says she is concerned about the growing number of drownings. "Money should never be a barrier to acquiring fundamental knowledge," she said.
In addition, Charlene also drew attention to the need for more lifeguards.
Having experienced such a tragic event when she was young, Princess Charlene believes that "vigilance is still necessary," as "nowhere is completely safe" when it comes to the dangers of water. She is also eager to "take the fight beyond borders" and hopes that, through the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, she can help save more lives.
Gabriella, Charlene's daughter, begins a new phase in her life
In addition to her social causes, Princess Charlene also dedicates herself to her twin children, Princes Jacques and Gabriella. At an official event held last month, in July, her subjects witnessed the beginning of a new phase in Gabriella's life, which is growing rapidly.
For the occasion, 10-year-old Gabriella wore a Dolce & Gabbana dress paired with raffia and leather Dior sandals. The look reflects the young princess's transition to a more mature style, something that has been evident in recent official events.
To match her daughter's look, Charlene of Monaco also chose a flowing floral dress, perfect for warmer summer afternoons. In ivory tones, the pattern was reflected in dark hues on the full skirt. The dress is by Zimmermann and retails for 895 euros.

Princess Gabriella of Monaco, daughter of Princess Charlene and Prince Albert of Monaco, has begun to show a more mature side when it comes to her attire for royal events. Little by little, the princess is adopting a style similar to her mother's.
