Cockroaches in your home? Understand what this could indicate and how to avoid it

The constant appearance of cockroaches in your home is not just a nuisance — it could be a sign that something is out of balance in the environment. According to biologist Fabiano Sores , these insects are true bioindicators of the health of your home. “When the environment is out of balance, they start to appear in greater numbers,” he warns.
According to the expert, three main factors favor the presence of cockroaches: food supply, shelter and ideal temperature and humidity conditions . Food remains, open packaging, poorly stored garbage, cracks, furniture that has not been properly cleaned and even exposed pipes can serve as an invitation for these insects.
“Kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms are the most targeted places, precisely because they maintain these favorable conditions,” explains Fabiano. Among the most common species are Blatella germanica , known as the kitchen cockroach, and the sewer cockroach, which is larger, flies and tends to cause more repulsion.
But the problem goes beyond disgust. “They can transmit diseases , as they walk through sewers and leave feces and microorganisms wherever they go,” warns the biologist.

The main combat strategy, according to Fabiano, is to maintain cleanliness . “This is the basis of everything. Frequent cleaning, well-stored garbage and dry, airy environments make it difficult for these insects to survive.”
In specific cases, the use of insecticides in spray and gel form may be sufficient. “But the ideal is to always combine the chemical product with good environmental hygiene,” he emphasizes.
Another effective measure is to use screens in drains and pipes, which prevent access by cockroaches coming from the sewage system. In cases of infestation or resistance to market products, the specialist recommends hiring a professional integrated pest control service. “Specialized companies use specific formulations and protocols that last about a month.”
