Nobu has become a symbol of Japanese culinary art on the international stage. The restaurant created by Nobu Matsuhisa is now a brand with over a dozen restaurants, which Robert De Niro helped develop. But even he does not have a dish on the menu that he is the patron of. Although Nobu is often visited by celebrities, the only one whose name is on the menu is model Cindy Crawford.

Back in 1989, Matsuhisa , who ran his own restaurant in Los Angeles, balked at De Niro's proposal. The star, charmed by the chef's dishes, suggested opening another location in New York. He rightly believed that the chef's signature dish - black cod in miso - deserved more fame than the one it enjoyed in the City of Angels.

Only after five years, the chef, hounded by the star, decided it was time to spread his wings. In 1994, Matsuhisa's cuisine was discovered in New York, then London, and today his brand is associated with gourmets from all over the world. The restaurant's established position became an impulse for De Niro to take the next step - opening hotels.

Cindy Crawford has her own dish at Nobu

The documentary "Nobu", which hit American cinemas in early July, presents the backstage of Matsuhisa's career and life. Among other things, we will learn what made supermodel Cindy Crawford decide to have her own dish on the Nobu menu.

As the chef explained to The Post, the model had been a regular customer since Nobu's inception. Matsuhisa was eager to rename kakiage , a Japanese dish in which vegetables and seafood are fried in tempura, the dish "Cindy Rice."

"I used to do photoshoots all the time in Los Angeles and I would always want to have Nobu for lunch, but... if I didn't get to eat right away... I wanted something that could sit for an hour or two," the model explained in the video, which was directed by Matt Tyrnauer.
