Jimmy Kimmel Live! returns to television after controversial suspension

The late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return to ABC this Tuesday after a temporary suspension following the controversy surrounding a monologue by the host that alluded to the MAGA movement and the murder of Charlie Kirk .

ABC , owned by The Walt Disney Company , confirmed the show 's return in a statement explaining that the hiatus was a decision made to "avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional time for the country."

The company said it held talks with Kimmel in the following days and that, after that process, it was agreed to resume the broadcast .

The suspension occurred last Wednesday after Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr , along with affiliated stations, expressed objections to the content of Kimmel 's monologue, considering it inappropriate.

The situation sparked a broad public discussion about freedom of expression , censorship , and the role of media corporations in the face of political tensions. Groups of protesters gathered outside Disney offices in New York and California, as well as outside the show 's filming theater in Hollywood.

In response, more than 400 figures from the art world, including Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, signed an open letter in support of Kimmel , promoted by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Throughout his career, Kimmel has been critical of former President Donald Trump and the MAGA political movement. The verbal sparring between the two has been a constant in recent years.

The show , which employs between 200 and 250 people, has been recognized several times for its community involvement . During the Writers Guild strike in 2023, Kimmel temporarily funded the production team, and more recently, the show 's studios served as a relief center during the Los Angeles wildfires.
