I never wear yellow – why I'm still opting for sneakers in the trend color for summer 2025

Sneakers in the trendy color yellow: Why a VOGUE editor is opting for the unusual sneakers in 2025.

First of all: I've never seen the movie "Kill Bill" withUma Thurman . Why am I telling you this? Well, when I first saw the yellow Onitsuka Tiger sneakers on Instagram last year, I had no idea about their cult status. If you weren't aware of them either: The protagonist, the "Bride" (played by Uma Thurman), wears the aforementioned yellow and black sneakers in the 2003 film, paired with a yellow jumpsuit.

Perhaps my ignorance was an advantage, though. It made the yellow sneakers all the more surprising—and stylish, too. And that's considering the fact that I never normally wear yellow. It's true: I can't even begin to remember the last item in my closet that was in that sunny color. It mostly consists of minimalist basic pieces in black, white, gray, or dark blue—which provide the perfect foundation for these colorful sneakers .

Even the looks I found online with the yellow Onitsuka Tigers were mostly muted outfits in neutral colors, which really brought out the trendy color of the shoes. These looks seemed particularly harmonious when the black of the sneakers was echoed somewhere in the styling (this also applies to the other models, such as the trendy "Japan" sneakers from Adidas ). Nevertheless, I was still hesitant. Such eye-catching sneakers with my otherwise rather understated and minimalist style? Could this really be the right fashion trend for me?

However, when butter yellow was chosen as one of the trend colors for spring/summer 2025, it became clear to me: My obsession with yellow sneakers wouldn't fade anytime soon. After all, the bright yellow tone is also a perfect complement to simple outfits in muted colors and, in the warmer seasons, also goes wonderfully with white or light blue.
