Richard Osman reveals whether he will have Thursday Murder Club cameo

The Thursday Murder Club film is just around the corner with the adaptation of Richard Osman's novel landing on Netflix on August 28.

The film, which has a trailer, boasts a star-studded cast including Helen Mirren, Celia Imrie, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley as the four amateur sleuths investigating a murder.

The movie also stars Osman's wife, Ingrid Oliver, as Joyce's (Imrie) daughter Joanna and the author spoke to Radio Times about whether he too would have a cameo appearance.

Dispelling the idea, he shared: “I thought everyone would go, ‘Why is Richard in the back of a police station in Kent?’” Osman also shared his thoughts on the adaptation of his book and he was pleased there were some differences.

“There was never a moment during filming when I thought, ‘This is different to what’s in my head.’ Because if it wasn’t different it would be the worst thing ever made.

"What’s in my head is nine hours where every single line of dialogue and every single internal monologue is there. The world’s most boring film.”

In a separate chat on his podcast, The Rest Is Entertainment, Osman explained how his wife's role was "not my idea, I have to say, but [writer/director] Chris Columbus's idea".

The British actress and comedian, who forms one half of the comic double act Watson & Oliver, married the former Pointless host in December 2022.

They met when she was a contestant on TV celebrity quiz show Richard Osman's House of Games.

The Thursday Murder Club director Chris Columbus was keen for screenwriter Katy Brand to take the lead on adapting Osman's novel.

On what made her the perfect choice, he said: "Katy is one of the sharpest, most perceptive people I’ve ever met.

"When we first discussed her adaptation of the book, she was adamant that the film preserved the underlying British satire and humor of the novel.

"She also displayed a surgical precision in her storytelling, simplifying the dense plot of the novel, while still being extraordinarily faithful to the story and characters."
