The Last of Us Season 2 Finale: What Happened to Tommy?

This story contains spoilers for The Last of Us season 2 finale.
If the season 2 finale of The Last of Us left you shaken and stirred, you're not alone. Abby and Ellie's endless circle of violence has left innocent (you may debate that, but still!) people dead. But as the show's body count rises, there's one possible victim whose fate is unclear by the closing minutes of season 2: Tommy Miller, played by Gabriel Luna.
So, is Tommy Miller dead or not? While the show leaves things ambiguous, the games offer a clear answer. Though HBO series has taken a handful of liberties from the games, the source material is still a reliable crystal ball in forecasting the direction of future storylines. This includes, of course, whether or not certain characters live or die.
At the end of The Last of Us, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) catches up with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) after Ellie's violent night ends with her killing both Mel (Ariela Barer) and Owen (Spencer Lord). Between them and Nora (Tati Gabrielle), who died in the toxic depths of the W.L.F. hospital, Ellie is close to satisfying her revenge for Joel's death. But Abby isn't going to let Ellie tear through her crew without pushing back.
After swiftly killing Jesse (Young Mazino), Abby threatens to kill a weakened Tommy Miller before pointing her gun at Ellie. "I let you live," Abby says, "and you wasted it." One gunshot and a cut to black later, and Abby awakes three days earlier at W.L.F. headquarters—in a football stadium that W.L.F. converted to a fortified base—which implies that the upcoming third season will retell the story from Abby's perspective.

In the original The Last of Us games, Tommy Miller survives Abby's assault. But that doesn’t mean he walks away without a scratch.
While viewers can most likely bank on Ellie surviving Abby's bullets, things feel less sure for Tommy. In the games, Tommy endures the attack in the theater and continues to live all the way through the end of the game. However, Tommy doesn't walk away from Abby so easily. Tommy is severely injured from a bullet that grazes his temple, which leaves him blind in one eye and walking with a physical limp.
In the games, more time passes after their encounter with Abby, and the still-injured Tommy tries to convince Ellie to hunt Abby out of obligation for Joel and Jesse, and for Tommy's condition. Though Ellie refuses at first, her lingering traumas eventually convince her to seek out Abby and resolve their feud once and for all.
So, hardcore Tommy stans can sleep easy tonight: Tommy lives in The Last of Us Part II, which means he'll likely live to see the end of season 3 of the HBO show. But in a ravaged world like this, no one survives for long.
