It's Always Happy Hour in Bermuda

It's Always Happy Hour in Bermuda
preview for It's Always Happy Hour in Bermuda

Drinking in Bermuda means more than just sipping a cocktail. Each drink—whether it's a classic or just your regular sip of choice enjoyed in a distinct setting—brings you deeper into the island's culture.

Consider the standout Bacardi Daiquiri, as shown in the video above. The Bacardi 1862 Cocktail Bar pays homage to its namesake spirit—a favorite on the island—and the brand's whopping 160 years of production with this combination of rum, lime and sugar. If you can’t get an exclusive invite to the Bacardi Cocktail Bar, fear not. You can sip daiquiris all around the island—including at the elegant Harry’s Restaurant + Bar, which overlooks Hamilton Harbour.

For something a little spicier, ask to try Bermuda’s twist on a Bloody Mary over at the St. Regis Bar. Just like the Bermuda sun, the Gates Bay Mary packs some heat—and you can bet this cocktail swaps vodka for rum. (Goslings Black Seal, to be exact.)

Finally, in addition to its innovative and evolving cocktail scene, you won’t want to leave the island without trying two of its most popular drinks. Stop at Tobacco Bay Beach for a taste of the classic Rum Swizzle (aka the national drink of Bermuda), made with both dark and light rums, pineapple and orange juices, bitters, lime, and simple syrup. At Azura, a Dark 'N Stormy is the way to go. The playfully named cocktail, made with Goslings Black Seal Rum and ginger beer, is believed to have been created by British sailors on the island over 100 years ago. Its color contrast represents dark clouds over calm waters—an ominous thing to see at sea, but a beautiful thing to see being handed to you in a rocks glass.

"Happy hour" is a double entendre in Bermuda. Sure, it's a time when you can save a few bucks on a Rum Swizzle—but, more importantly, it’s when you can connect with the island's heritage in another way. Whether you're having a solo sip or trading stories with local Bermudians over rounds, you're certain to come away with a deeper understanding of this laid-back but vibrant destination
