Is Dept. Q Coming Back for Season 2?

Is Dept. Q Coming Back for Season 2?
preview for Dept. Q - Official Trailer (Netflix)

For Department Q, no case is ever closed. The new crime thriller Dept. Q, an export of Scotland, has drawn buzz since its May 29 premiere on Netflix. But for those who are deep in this tartan noir, you may find yourself wondering what's next for these keepers of lost causes.

In Dept. Q, Matthew Goode stars as Carl Morck, a vinegary veteran detective in Scotland who returns from a traumatizing shooting that left a rookie beat cop dead and his partner paralyzed. Upon his return to the office, Morck is given an unlikely assignment: working as the sole officer of newly-established Department Q, an underfunded, understaffed division tasked with solving a mountain of cold cases... all from the depths of an Edinburgh basement.

While there isn't a definitive answer about the future of Dept. Q just yet, there are strong indicators that a future is in store. And for those who are impatient, we actually have a surprise for you: There's actually more Dept. Q to enjoy—you just don't know it yet.

Here's everything we know about Dept. Q season 2, and where else to get your fix.

Is Dept. Q Renewed for Season 2?

No, Dept. Q is not renewed—yet. While Netflix has yet to disclose its renewal plans, fans can be assured Netflix is enthusiastic about it. Very enthused. On June 6, TVLine reported that Dept. Q was submitted by the streamer for Emmy consideration. The show premiered two days shy of eligibility deadline, making Netflix's submission a huge gesture of confidence.

While Dept. Q may see stiff competition at September's Emmys against shows such as The Pitt, Severance, Andor, and The White Lotus, Netflix putting any muscle behind the series is a good sign for its renewal.

Where Else Can I Watch More Dept. Q?

Here's the fun part. Dept. Q is based on the Department Q book series by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, which began with The Keeper of Lost Causes in 2007. The books have English translations by Penguin Random House, which means they're all easy to buy online. (Or, even better: Go to your local library!)

Netflix's Dept. Q isn't the first time Adler-Olsen's books have been made for the screen, either. In Adler-Olsen's native Denmark, his Department Q books have been adapted into commercially successful films, starting with The Keeper of Lost Causes released in 2013. If you have an AMC+ subscription, you can binge the movies on Prime Video.

While only Netflix knows for sure what's next for Dept. Q, newly christened Q-ties (get it? that's your fandom's name now, folks) still have a bunch of books and movies to enjoy. Binge them all, and before you know it, you'll see season 2 on your queues before you know it.
