10 Modular Sofas That'll Make Moving or Rearranging Easier Than Ever

- White Glove delivery
- Modular pieces can stand alone
- 155 fabrics choices
- The smaller size comes with a lot of cushions
- Soft seat cushions might not be for everyone
The Harmony sofa is one of the most popular couches on the market and a star in West Elm’s collection, so when I stumbled upon the modular version, I had to share it. Yes, this sofa might be a bit basic—any friend who throws tasteful house parties is liable to have it—but it is truly worth every penny and will give your space a lived-in look. This super soft, cozy couch is perfect for lazy-day lounging, though perhaps not sleeping because it’s not an incredibly deep sofa.
With this modular design, the two pieces of the sofa can stand alone, so if you need some space from your partner, you can create your own corner armchair. The pieces are attached with alligator clips. And with 155 fabric options to browse, ranging from performance to bouclé, you can get exactly the look you want. It’s currently available in two sizes. I featured the smaller one, but there is a 121” size for larger spaces.

- Burrow specializes in modular seating, so it is really easy to maneuver
- Extra modules available for add-on
- Choice between low or high arms
- It’s on you to assemble it; but it comes in a surprising amount of boxes
- Only three fabric options, including the Italian leather
Burrow was one of the OG direct-to-consumer furniture disruptors. You’ve likely heard of them—perhaps not by choice—through social media targeting and podcast ads. I view most DTC furniture brands with a healthy sense of skepticism, but after testing Burrow’s sofas in the brand’s NYC flagship store multiple times, I say the couches are worth the hype. Burrow is the king of simple modular sofas, and the Mambo is my (and Esquire’s) favorite model.
Some of Burrow’s sofas look like starter sofas, but the Mambo is a beautiful couch from head-to-toe, especially if you choose the buttery Italian leather. It’s got a firm seat, unlike many of the slouchy, sink-down options on this list, which I think is a big plus for your spine and tailbone. The Mambo is connected using custom, easy-to-use clips from Burrow. If you move into a bigger space, instead of springing for a whole new couch, you can just buy additional modules until your Mambo is seven pieces.

Article is a personal favorite of mine for furniture. Every piece is so thoughtfully designed, and everything I’ve tested from the company has been well-made, which is a rarity in the world of online furniture. Its modular sofas are no exception. The Beta Corner Sectional, which boasts a deep seat and pillowy reversible cushions, was designed with couch potatoes in mind. All three seats look inviting, and the corner spot is the ideal spot for stretching out your legs. Article is a definite upgrade, but unlike some of the other sofas on this list, you will have to assemble it yourself, though the brand says it should only take five minutes.
If this arrangement isn’t what you want for your space, there are 12 other modular options to check out. The colors are unfortunately a little limited. I personally suggest the Cypress Green corduroy, otherwise you’ll be choosing between a white and gray performance fabric.

You would never guess that this sofa was modular from a glance. This sectional is composed of three pieces: An armless chair, a left armchair, and a right armchair. Often, modular sofas look very firm, upright, and honestly, a little cheap. But this one from Crate & Barrel looks so comfy that you know you’d be fighting for your life trying to stay awake during an episode of White Lotus. This deep and low-to-the-ground sofa is named Unwind for a reason.
With its slouchy silhouette and slubby-looking ghent fabric, it looks sophisticated and cool without feeling too try-hard. That said, ghent fabric can feel rough, like sandpaper, to some, so if you do want to take a nap, we suggest adding some pillows and blankets. Although the Unwind seems low-maintenance, the back pillow cushions need to be fluffed every night to remain bouncy.

- Reviews say that the cushions do require fluffing, but there are down alternative cushions available for an extra $200
- Pricey, unless you wait for a sale
Say what you will about Interior Define’s lengthy shipping times, but the retailer does make high-quality couches. This modular leather sofa looks like it belongs in a country estate’s wood-paneled library—a far cry from the leather sofa that is usually found in a man’s bachelor pad. The leather is pigment-dyed, with 11 color options available, ranging from Pecan (pictured) to Nightfall.
Although the sofa cushions are described as soft, some reviewers say they’re on the firmer side, assuming that the cushions will soften with use. Just a note that the arms are a bit higher than some of the other sofas on this list, so sitting on either side of the sofa might be uncomfortable for shorter guests.

- Highly designed modular sofa
- Expert construction
- Very expensive
- The extra deep seat might not be for everyone
If this modular sofa isn’t a conversation piece, I don’t know what is. Designed by Gabriel Tan and made in Italy, the Luva is inspired by a boxing glove for the way it curls around the sitter. And that’s not even the coolest part—the back cushions are adjustable, so you can curl them down when you want an upright seat or unfurl them when you want to lounge. The modules are connected with ganging brackets. It comes in a two-seater or three-seater configuration, which includes a right- or left-oriented chaise.
That said, if designer furniture is not your thing, then honestly, you probably think this looks goofy and is way too expensive. You'd be much better off choosing one of the more traditional options on this list.

When I think of Floyd, greige millennial floors and white walls pop into my head. (I believe the kids are calling it the "landlord special.") This DTC furniture brand is heavily associated minimalism, which is personally not my favorite. This blocky modular couch looks like it came out of Minecraft, in my opinion.
But for the sake of objectivity, I have to say a lot of people prefer this sort of simplicity. If you like this look, then Floyd is a great choice for you (though not me). Similar to the landlord special memes, this style of contemporary furniture features a lot of poorly made brands, but Floyd is not one. It takes the look but does so with quality materials. It is one of the firmest couches on this list, so it’s a better fit for those who like to sit upright or want more support.
Floyd is famous for making easy-to-assemble and -disassemble furniture for those who are moving frequently. The modular sectional comes apart via heavy-duty metal clips. You can choose from 16 different fabric options, including the millennial mineral, though there are some more vibrant colors, too, like Mint and Terra Cotta.

The problem with modular sofas is that they don’t often vary in design, so it can be a challenge to find even a handful that look distinctive. This Sevigne sofa, which is part of the CB2 x Goop collaboration, perfectly fits the bill. Gwyneth Paltrow took inspiration from modern Parisian apartments and mid-century Italian modernist furniture. I’m no Gwyneth fan, but I do love this sofa’s silhouette and how it truly can function as three separate pieces. It feels airy with its American white oak legs, while most modular sofas sit directly on the ground.
Admittedly, this channel-tufted leather sofa might not be ideal for all-day lounging, but it’s a great focal piece. The bone-colored leather would make any room look expensive.

Albany Park is another DTC company that makes good quality modular sofas. If you want a no-frills sofa that won’t look stale in a few years, Albany Park has you covered with the Kova Sofa. There are many iterations of the Kova, but I was drawn to this L-Shape, which is more conducive to conversations and hanging out. Plus, you can rearrange the couch as needed.
The retailer just reimagined its sofa cushions in a new non-slip, box shape, which is purported to be more supportive. There are 33 performance fabrics available in a variety of colors. Reviewers say this couch is comfortable and pet-approved.

If you want designer style, but don’t want to pay those prices, may I present this relatively affordable modular option from Wayfair’s more stylish sister site, AllModern. This Danish-designed sofa might not be best as your main living room sofa but would work in a smaller room, like a home office or an awkward corner that you’ve never figured out. Like with Burrow, it’s easy to buy and add on other modules if you want to expand the sofa.
Sometimes corduroy fabric can make a sofa look cheap, but reviewers say that it adds a cozy feel to their spaces. The only downside is that there’s only one color choice: The beige, so beware of red wine, even though corduroy is generally considered easy to clean.

Don’t just take my word for it—here’s how I judged these modular sofas.
Quality: No one wants to spend thousands of dollars on a sofa that starts to look shabby and fall apart within a year. I’m skeptical of the vast majority of sofa companies and only included furniture brands whose showrooms I’ve visited and sofas I’ve tested, and have known reputations of good quality.
Flexibility: The whole point of a modular sofa is that you can play around with the configuration. I judged the sofas based on whether the pieces could stand by themselves. I also considered how easy it was to clip or unclip them apart. Some I tested in person myself, and with others, I scrolled through reviews on the retailer’s website to get a sense of whether the sofa was a pain in the ass or not.
Looks: Is it classic? Is it modern? Or does it fall somewhere in between the two.
Ease of Assembly: Ideally, all sofas should be put together by someone other than yourself, but if you have to put it together, how easy is it?

The benefits of a modular sofa is that it’s adaptable. If you’re living in a city where you’re moving every few years, for example, a modular sofa can save you a lot of grief. You can take it apart, so it’s easy to maneuver in and out of doors. Plus, if your square footage changes, you can always turn your sofa into two chairs. And if you want to really go crazy, you can change up your living room for short-term situations, like parties, opening up your space for more guests.
On the other side of the coin, several sofa companies on this list allow you to buy additional modules to add onto your existing sofa. If you happen to win the lottery and upgrade to a much bigger space, you can make your sofa much bigger to accommodate your new lifestyle.
