The first village settlement in the Aegean islands was discovered in Gökçeada

Excavations have been carried out for 15 years with the permission and financial support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums.

Studies revealed that the Gökçeada Uğurlu-Zeytinlik Mound settlement was the first village settlement in the Aegean islands whose food economy was based on agriculture and animal husbandry.

Additionally, archaeological studies show that pottery making, metallurgy, and monumental architecture emerged earliest among the Aegean islands, and that it is the settlement that hosts the earliest evidence of urbanism.
