First Turk elected to the Board of Trustees of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences

Dean of İstinye University Faculty of Medicine and neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Türker Kılıç became the first Turkish scientist to be elected to the Board of Trustees of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences (WAAS).

The World Academy of Arts and Sciences has eight Turkish members. Türker Kılıç, a member of the Academy since December 2021, was elected to the Board of Trustees. The World Academy of Arts and Sciences (WAAS) was founded in 1960 by many distinguished scientists and intellectuals, including Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer (father of the Manhattan Project), Bertrand Russell and Joseph Needham (founders of UNESCO), Lord Boyd Orr (first Director-General of the FAO), and Brock Chisholm (first Director-General of the WHO). The Academy serves as a forum for scientists, artists, and scholars committed to addressing the challenges facing humanity objectively, scientifically, and globally, regardless of political boundaries. In its founding declaration, the purpose of WAAS is expressed as follows: "Knowledge alone is not sufficient. Wisdom is required. Wisdom, however, is possible with an ethical orientation that pursues the common good of humanity."

WAAS is a call to action that declares that being a scientist means not only "knowing," but also meaning, choosing, and taking responsibility. WAAS members come from diverse cultures, nationalities, intellectual disciplines, and professions, and are chosen for their excellence in the natural, technological, and social sciences, the arts and humanities, various professions, and public service. From the outset, WAAS's focus has been addressing global social challenges.

In 2013, WAAS collaborated with other organizations to establish the World University Consortium. In collaboration with the WUC, WAAS conducts a series of international conferences on future education, curriculum development roundtables to develop new interdisciplinary topics, and pilot projects in collaboration with experimental partner educational institutions. WAAS has been granted special consultative status by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and consultative status by UNESCO.

Prof. Dr. Türkr Kılıç thanked the members of the Academy for his election to the Board of Trustees.
