The curious story behind the footballer's name

Everyone has been talking about him, but not for the best reasons. Life dealt him a cruel blow and no one was indifferent to the tragedy.

A few days after getting married to the great love of his life, Diogo Jota passed away in the early hours of last Thursday, July 3, in a violent car accident in Spain. His brother , André Silva , a Penafiel player, who was travelling in the same car, also died.

Why Jota?

The name has been widely commented on but there are still those who do not understand the nickname that the Portuguese international used.

Silva is his family name, but it was not the name he chose to shine on the pitch. As a young man, when he was first kicking a ball, Diogo needed to distinguish himself from others with the same name and so he chose to use the initial of his middle name, ' José '. And so “Diogo Jota” was born.

A decision so premature that, as we know, it even had to be authorized in writing by the parents.
