Doctor reveals surprising effect of common spice on heart

It may seem like a small amount—and it is. But a simple clove a day can become an ally for vascular health. Rich in natural compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties , such as eugenol and flavonoids, the spice has gained ground in discussions about heart disease prevention and cholesterol control .

"Eugenol, the main active ingredient in cloves, helps reduce oxidative stress, which is directly linked to the formation of fatty plaques in the arteries," cardiologist Tito Paladino explains to Metrópoles . "This means that, in small amounts, cloves can act as extra protection for blood vessels ."

Despite its potential, the doctor warns: there is still no robust clinical evidence in humans that proves a direct relationship between daily consumption of the spice, cardiovascular health , and reduced cholesterol levels.

"The most promising studies were conducted in laboratories or with animals. These are important indicators, but we still need more research to confirm this with certainty," says the professional.

Cloves, also called cloves, can bring several health benefits, as the spice can be used in the treatment of infections and pain.

Even so, there's no need to forgo the potential benefits. The safe recommendation, according to the expert, is to consume one or two cloves a day, either in teas or added to foods.

But, as with everything related to health, moderation is essential. "Excessive consumption can cause gastric irritation , interfere with blood clotting, and even overload the liver, especially due to eugenol," says Tito Paladino.

Spices do not replace medicines

Although it may seem tempting to swap medications for natural solutions, the doctor emphasizes that cloves do not replace medications or traditional cholesterol control measures.

"It can be a natural ally, but only as a complement to a balanced diet and regular medical check-ups. Diet, exercise, and, when necessary, medication remain the mainstay of cardiovascular prevention," the expert reports.

There are also restrictions. People who use blood thinners, have gastric ulcers, clotting disorders, or liver problems should avoid continuous use of the spice. "In these cases, cloves can do more harm than good. Therefore, it's always essential to talk to your doctor before including this type of practice in your routine," concludes Tito Paladino.
