Corvo restores the Barroca area to protect biodiversity

The Barroca natural area, on the island of Corvo, Azores, will be the target of a recovery and enhancement project to “restore the biodiversity of the site”, in an intervention recognized as an Action of Relevant Public Interest, according to a dispatch published this Tuesday.

The project, an initiative of the Corvo Municipal Council, also aims to “ensure the sustainable use of natural resources and guarantee harmonization between the economic and social development of the municipality ”, reads the dispatch signed by the regional secretaries of Agriculture and Food, António Ventura, of the Sea and Fisheries, Mário Pinho, and of the Environment and Climate Action, Alonso Miguel, and published in the Official Gazette.

Two coordinated actions are planned, specifically the construction of a walkway along the Barroca natural area and the restoration of the natural pool area.

The proposed intervention for the walkway foresees the possibility of introducing endemic flora species, the definition of a circulation zone and resting areas for contemplating the landscape and bird watching.

Regarding the restoration of the natural pool area, it is based on “the enhancement of the natural heritage of the sea/land interface of Corvo Island, through the definition of a route to the sea, without neglecting the identity of that place”.

With these interventions, the municipality aims to improve the quality of public spaces , enhance the local landscape and ensure the sustainable use of the natural resources of the smallest island in the Azores, reinforcing the attractiveness of the municipality for residents and tourists.

The recognition of the project as an Action of Relevant Public Interest takes into account “its importance and that it cannot be carried out in an area not classified in the Corvo Island Coastal Planning Plan and in an area not integrated into the Ecological Reserve”, it reads.

The order comes into force the day after its publication, that is, Wednesday.
