F1's Charles Leclerc and Ferrari Just Unveiled Their First Capsule Collection

F1's Charles Leclerc and Ferrari Just Unveiled Their First Capsule Collection

This week in Monaco, on the sun-soaked roof of the Fairmont Hotel, Formula One phenom Charles Leclerc threw a little party with Ferrari, the iconic Italian brand he drives for on the circuit. But even though this is the weekend of the Monaco Grand Prix, the subject of celebration wasn’t the upcoming race. Instead, the festivities consisted of a full-blown fashion show—complete with a dance breakdown on the catwalk—to unveil Leclerc’s first capsule collection with Ferrari’s fashion line, helmed by industry vet Rocco Iannone.

It’s a project that’s been years in the making. Leclerc is an avowed fashion fan, and he’s been keeping tabs on Iannone’s work for Ferrari since the very beginning. “I met with Rocco early on,” he told the crowd at the Fairmont before the show. “I was just following the journey and then, one day, we sat together around a table and decided to do something. I’ve always been super passionate about it, and it was so incredibly interesting to go through the whole process from beginning to end. It’s not something that I expected. Many things weren’t expected, actually—how deep we dug into my personality, what made me feel comfortable, different kinds of fits and colors.”

The fruits of that labor were on display in the new collection, which leans casual and features standout pieces like tie-dye-effect denim and hyper-textured hoodies inspired by Leclerc’s off-the-track style. The fit is often oversized, to match Leclerc’s personal preference, and the color blue—a nod to Monaco, which aside from hosting perhaps the most famous Formula 1 Grand Prix in the world is also Leclerc’s home—pops up time and time again. There are nods to motorsports and, occasionally, elements you’ll find on a Ferrari car. But overall, the vibe was clearly more about Leclerc, the man, than Leclerc, the F1 driver.

During an interview the day before the show, Iannone said the design process, “was like opening Charles’s wardrobe and picking up the things that are meaningful for him and significant for his daily life. There is this sense of street style in his aesthetic attitude, in his mood.”

He continued, “When I met Charles the first time, I immediately recognized someone who is very connected to fashion. Someone very sensitive about how to interpret fashion in everyday life—but not in a fashionista's way, in a very natural, spontaneous way. When we started to collaborate, he was very curious about this kind of discipline, this kind of world. It came very naturally.”

It makes sense that things flowed easily. Leclerc was in the process of starting his own fashion collection before he started in Formula 1 in 2018, which soon left no time for side hustles. But his fascination with the fashion world never went away. “Creatively, I’ve always been very curious, whether it’s music or fashion,” he said before the show. “I always enjoy digging a little bit further…So I just loved every second of that process, to go through my personality. Rocco asked the right questions, because at first, I thought, I like blue, I like this kind of fit, let’s go for it. And it was a lot more than that, really a lot more than that. There was no stone left unturned.”

If you’re looking to channel some of Leclerc’s style for yourself, you don’t need to wait. As seems only natural for something from Ferrari, the collection has arrived with all due speed and is currently available online. You can also score a piece or two at Ferrari’s new retail outpost at the Fairmont Hotel in Monaco, should you happen to be there for the race this weekend. If you’re really lucky, maybe you’ll even bump into Leclerc himself. Just keep an eye out for the guy in the oversized hoodie and wide-leg jeans.
