Today in Spain: A roundup of the latest news on Thursday

Iberia launches sale on flights to the United States, 12 regions on alert for high temperatures, US warns Spain against letting Huawei store its wire taps and more news on Thursday July 17th.

Iberia launches sale on flights to the United States

Spain's flagship carrier has launched a flash sale with discounts of up to €300 on holiday packages to the United States.

Iberia's offer, valid only until July 24th, includes deals with just flights or flights/hotel and/or car rental to destinations such as New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Miami.

For example, for round-trip flights with three nights in a hotel in New York, there's a package starting at €639. Similarly, in Boston, the going rate is €699.

This is an interesting offer for our American readers and anyone else looking to travel to the US from Spain. Iberia's sale comes at a time when the US tourism industry is suffering some of the consequences of Donald Trump's policies and negative views about them abroad.

US warns Spain against letting Huawei store its wire taps

The US has warned Spain against its decision to award China's Huawei the management and storage of wiretaps involved in legal cases. These would be used by state security forces and intelligence services.

"Spain is playing with fire by putting its national security and that of its citizens at risk," said Rick Crawford, head of the institution responsible for overseeing the US Intelligence Community.

"By using a known Chinese Communist Party (CCP) agent to collect and store insurmountable amounts of sensitive data, Spain has left itself vulnerable to clear threats to security and sovereignty, not only to itself, but also to its allies around the world."

Young man attempts to burn his underage girlfriend alive in Gran Canaria

A 20-year-old man has been arrested after he set fire fire to his 17-year-old girlfriend in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The victim, who suffered burns across 90 percent of her body, told police that her boyfriend poured an inflammable liquid on her before lighting her on fire.

The teenage girl is due to be flown to Seville's burns unit for treatment.

The number of women murdered in Spain due to gender violence stood at 20 in late June 2025, and 1,314 since 2003.

Thursday set to be a scorcher in Spain

Thursday July 17th is going to be a hot day in Spain, with up to 12 regions on high temperature warnings.

Andalusia, Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, La Rioja, Madrid and Valencia all have orange alerts, while the yellow warning is activated in the Balearic Islands, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Extremadura and Murcia.

Much of Spain's interior will be hovering around the 40C mark, while coastal locations will be up to 10C cooler.

Light rain is expected in Galicia and Asturias, and the Canaries will continue experiencing calima (haze), contributing to the heat sensation.
