Jesse and Joy tell a story of success, love, forgiveness and resilience
A story of success, love, courage, forgiveness, and resilience is told by singers Jesse and Joy Huerta in the documentary " Jesse and Joy : What We Never Said," an HBO production in which they address previously unpublished details of their lives, such as their complicated relationship with their father.
"The beautiful thing about all this is that we're still here together, we're still together. It's a success story, a story of love , courage, forgiveness, and resilience. And that's what he told us: okay, let's get it out," Jesse said in an interview with EFE .
The duo , which burst onto the music scene 20 years ago, spends the four-part series opening up about their most intimate side, speaking specifically about their origins, their family, and especially their father, who had a huge influence on their lives and shaped their approach to making music .
"Dad was the one who pushed me. He said to me one day, 'Do you like the drums? Come play drums there.' I was 6 years old. If he hadn't pushed me into that and a lot of other things (...) we wouldn't have achieved anything of who we are ," he said.
Music proved to be a way of escape for the brothers, as they grew up under the strict authority of their father, the evangelical pastor Eduardo Huerta .
"I couldn't stop thinking about how I was going to get out of my house," Joy confesses through tears as the project progresses.
For the band's vocalist, this documentary , which premieres on September 25 , served as a catharsis because she recognized that "it is necessary to return to the past to heal the present ."
"Suddenly, for a documentary project like this, everyone is giving their perspective, and in one way or another, it did help heal certain wounds and, on the other hand, perhaps understand the other's point of view a little better," he noted.
Eduardo Huerta died in 2013, but he left a deep mark on his children, although they acknowledge that they can now see him through the love they feel for him.
"I know Dad tried to improve on many of the things he experienced, he repeated others, and in the end I see him with much love and gratitude," Jesse said.
The best moment of his career
The documentary premieres just days after their Latin Grammy nomination for the album "Lo que nos faltató decir," which they wrote while making the documentary and while on tour.
"It wasn't something we were looking for, we were just in such basic, primal, instinct mode, that we were doing what we love the most, at the same time that we are on automatic telling what we are experiencing, at the same time that we are getting up on stage to sing, a lot of energy ," Joy noted.
And that energy , they said, is captured in every song on their album, which was felt not only by fans but also by the Academy members who made the Grammy nominations .
"(The documentary ) came at a time when, as Jessie says, it coincided with the album, it coincided with the culmination of an amazing year that we've had, with an incredible tour , which we couldn't be more grateful for. I think it's the best moment we've had in our career," the singer noted.
' Jesse and Joy : What We Never Said' will be available on HBO Max for Latin America and US Hispanic starting September 25. The production promises to move its fans by offering an honest look at their childhood, the challenges they faced, and how they found healing in music .
