The Mona Lisa disappears

Twenty-five years ago, the famous painter and art critic John Berger, in a lecture at the Tate Modern in London, asked why people visit museums and look at paintings. Part of his answer was: "It seems to me that we look at paintings in the hope of discovering a secret. Not a secret about art, but about life."
