Dark circles, redness, and pimples can be concealed in an instant with the right concealer. The key to a natural, even result is not only the right product, but also the correct application. We'll show you what's important when choosing a concealer and how to apply it optimally.

Covering small blemishes and skin imperfections is an integral part of many makeup routines. Finding the right concealer isn't always easy: liquid, cream, or stick concealer – which one is right for you? Don't worry, we'll shed some light on the matter and reveal what really matters when choosing and applying it.

Why do I need concealer and what does it do?

Concealers contain special color pigments that visually smooth out skin imperfections and imperfections, giving the complexion a fresher look. Combined with foundation, they easily create a harmonious overall look. The difference: While foundation is applied over a large area and evens out skin tone, concealer is used specifically where more coverage is needed—for example, for dark circles under the eyes, redness, or pimples. Thanks to its higher pigmentation, it provides particularly reliable coverage and ensures an even finish in specific areas.

How do I find the right concealer?

The selection of concealers is vast – the shelves are filled with a wide variety of products in all textures and colors. This makes it all the more important to choose the concealer that best suits your skin type. For dry skin, liquid or cream concealers are ideal. They blend easily and don't settle quickly in dry areas or wrinkles. Those with combination or sensitive skin should look for products labeled "non-comedogenic." This means the concealer won't clog pores, significantly reducing the risk of skin irritation or breakouts.

Liquid concealers have the advantage of allowing you to build up coverage layer by layer as needed. They blend effortlessly, hardly settle, and are suitable for all skin types. Creamy concealers are slightly richer and contain more pigments—this provides greater coverage and is particularly suitable for concealing more severe blemishes or dark circles under the eyes. Powder concealers provide a matte finish and are ideal for normal to slightly oily skin. However, they are less suitable for very dry or mature skin.

The right choice of color is crucial for a natural, even result.

Which color suits me?

Whether a concealer truly looks natural depends on choosing the right color. For cool skin types with reddish or bluish undertones, concealers with slightly pinkish nuances are suitable. Warm skin types with golden or beige tones, on the other hand, should opt for yellowish to brownish tones.

Generally speaking, the concealer can be half a shade to one shade lighter than your natural skin tone. While color testing is often done on the back of your hand, it's much more effective to test the shade directly on your face or collarbone. The skin on your collarbone actually most closely matches your natural skin tone, as it can't be distorted by other products. The right light is also important: Natural daylight is best, as artificial light, such as that often used in drugstores or department stores, can significantly alter the color tone.
